Spiritual Practice and Conscious Parenting
The Festival is presented in the conviction that the practice tools developed within all spiritual traditions offer resources invaluable to the endeavor of conscious parenting. These resources include, but are not limited to the following: meditation in its multiplicity of forms, plus various mindfulness practices, prayer, mantra, and body-awareness practices such as following the breath, hatha yoga, aikido, qigong, sacred dance, etc.
When adults learn to embody those resources, they can more readily
- Model loving, generous, and effective behavior for children
- Consistently treat children as we would all wish to be treated ourselves
- Help provide an appropriately elastic yet fully secure foundation for every child’s healthy growth and exploration of life’s possibilities.
In addition to its work with adults, the Festival will be a forum for presentation of resources to bring mindfulness practices directly to children.
Non-violence towards children and ourselves
To describe our purpose in different terms, the Festival will strive to enable parents, teachers, caregivers, and friends to consistently open their hearts to children, and avoid harm through application of the principle of non-violence: the goal of embodying physical, emotional, mental and spiritual non-violence towards children. Simultaneously, in order not to visit violence upon ourselves as adults, we recognize that creating non-violent contexts is a direction to cultivate, not a measuring rod with which we punish ourselves.
Sharing the resources
Through the Festival, we intend to make the resources deriving from spiritual practices far more widely available than they have been, to audiences that may never have suspected that such resources exist.
